Experience Argentina

Agribusiness and farming are global industries and managers need to be able to understand how events on another continent can impact decisions made at the firm-level, even in a different hemisphere. This course will study the beef, soybean and wine value-chains and the firms that provide the technology, production expertise, processing and transformation of farm products into food that is demanded globally.

AEC 361: International Agribusiness & Food Systems

Students enroll in AEC 361 during the spring semester and complete coursework prior to and following a two-week trip to Argentina over spring break. This is a full-semester, three credit hour course.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the government, economy, health care, education, social services and religion of the host country
  • Demonstrate inter-cultural understanding by displaying intercultural communication skills and recognizing cultural differences
  • Identify personal growth in response to experiences in another culture that challenge their world views
  • Demonstrate an increased capacity to analyze issues with appreciation for disparate viewpoints

Student Responsibilities

The student is expected to adhere to all stated and written guidelines within the specific international study abroad or tour. Attendance is required at all events determined by the host University or the instructor(s) leading the tour.

Each student is required to write a 10 page paper describing the trip that incorporates what was discussed prior to the trip and in Argentina.

Each student is required to create a 3' x 4' poster (using the template provided by the Department of Agricultural Economics) that provides an overview of their trip. The student will be present at the Ag Econ poster fair the semester following their return. For example, if a student completes a study abroad in the spring or the summer, the student will present their poster during the fall poster session.

Grading

This is a seminar class which means that there is no book or exams. Grades will depend upon your attendance and participation as we meet before the trip to Argentina. A large portion of your grade will depend on your paper completed after we return from Argentina and your conduct while in Argentina. Everyone who completes all assignments on-time and conduct themselves professionally on the study-tour will receive an A. Late/incomplete assignments or disorderly conduct on the study-tour will warrant an F.
