College offers a multitude of opportunities for students to grow beyond the classroom, and stepping into leadership roles is one of the most transformative. At the University of Kentucky, sophomore Jenna Coles exemplifies how embracing these opportunities can shape a student’s future. Pursuing degrees in Agricultural Economics and Accounting, Jenna is an active member and leader in various organizations, including serving as the Academic and Student Affairs Vice Chair for the Student Government Association (SGA), the President for Sigma Alpha, and the secretary of the Agricultural Economics Quiz Bowl Team. She is also an M-G CAFE Ambassador, Honors Ambassador, tour guide, and an active member of both the Collegiate Farm Bureau and Collegiate Cattleman's clubs, among many other activities.
Jenna’s extensive involvement allows her to gain hands-on experience while fostering her skills in communication, time management, and team building. Below, Jenna shares her thoughts on leadership, the lessons she’s learned, and advice for students considering similar paths.
Q: Why did you want to be in a leadership position?
Jenna explains that her natural instinct is to lead others, and she finds fulfillment in helping both herself and her peers grow. “I love being a leader because it’s not just about guiding others; it’s about mutual growth. While I foster development in my peers, they also inspire and challenge me to improve myself.”
Q: What skills or knowledge have you gained from being in a leadership position?
Through her various leadership roles, Jenna has gained a wide range of skills. One of the most important lessons she’s learned is time management. “Being involved in so many activities, I’ve realized how crucial it is to prioritize tasks and manage my time effectively.” She has also developed strong communication skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people, which she knows will serve her well in the future. Additionally, Jenna has recently started learning about social media management through her work with the AgriBusiness Club, expanding her skill set even further.
Q: What is your advice to students interested in taking leadership roles?
Jenna encourages students to take the leap and get involved. “The best way to know if a leadership role is for you is to just dive in,” she advises. She suggests reaching out to leaders you admire, asking questions, and even shadowing positions that interest you. “It’s important to understand the organization’s priorities and see if they align with your own values and goals. Make sure it’s a good fit both for you and for the club or organization.”
Jenna’s enthusiasm for involvement is evident, and she hopes to inspire others to explore similar paths. “I’ve found so much joy and growth in participating in clubs and representing organizations here on campus. It’s a chance to develop as a person and a professional, and the experience is truly invaluable.”
As Jenna’s story shows, taking on leadership roles in college can provide students with the skills, confidence, and connections they need to succeed. For students looking to make the most of their college years, getting involved in clubs and organizations is a powerful way to shape their futures and leave a lasting impact on their campus community.
