We're shining a spotlight on Braden Porter, one of our distinguished alumni who exemplifies the spirit of the Agricultural Economics program. With a story that resonates with many students navigating their college journey, Braden shares insights into his academic path, internships, and the invaluable connections made along the way.

Discovering a Passion for Ag Economics

Entering the University of Kentucky as an undecided student, Braden found direction through familial encouragement and personal exploration. With relatives who had pursued Agricultural Economics, he was motivated to delve into the College of Agriculture. Meeting influential peers like Landry Woodrum and Nathan Petrie solidified his decision, as he discovered a supportive community that underscored the potential for success within the major. Reflecting on his journey, Braden states, “If I did it all over again, I would still choose Ag Econ.”

Valuable Internships and Experiences

To complement his academic pursuits, Braden took a unique approach after his freshman year by returning to work on the family farm during the summer. His sophomore year summer was spent working for Judge Atkins, an experience that followed an eye-opening Ag Law class with Professor Brian Thomas. In his junior year, he interned with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture under Brian Lacefield in the Kentucky Office of Agricultural Policy For his senior year summer, Braden worked with Central Kentucky Ag Credit, further enhancing his practical knowledge in the field. Additionally, he worked in sports and campus marketing with JMI, where he was the sole Ag Economics major amidst a communications-focused team. Braden's diverse experiences have laid a strong foundation as he now pursues a law degree at the University of Kentucky.

Advice for Current Ag Econ Students

For current undergraduates navigating the Ag Economics program, Braden offers sage advice: “Ag Econ has the best professors. They are personable, outgoing, and eager to build relationships. My recommendation is to attend office hours and get to know your professors.” He emphasizes the importance of maintaining these connections, sharing that he still communicates regularly with Dr. Burdine and Dr. Shockley, recognizing that these relationships can serve as lifelong resources.

Engaging with the Agribusiness Club

Joining the Agribusiness Club was a transformative experience for Braden. Despite initial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he embraced the opportunities presented by the club, which included diverse trips across the state and beyond—from Frankfort to Florida. Exploring various facets of agriculture, from organic farms to distilleries, enriched his understanding of the industry. Serving as treasurer during his senior year, Braden noted that the club has helped many students secure job offers and has brought in numerous speakers who share invaluable insights.

Staying Connected as Alumni

Today, technology facilitates the ongoing connections forged during college. Braden shares that staying in touch with classmates is easier than ever, with a group of friends who regularly communicate, often sharing lighthearted memes. “With social media, it’s effortless to keep up with alumni,” he explains. Braden looks forward to attending Roundup, an annual gathering that allows alumni to reconnect in person, fostering community and collaboration among former students.

As Braden reflects on his time in the Ag Economics program, he expresses gratitude for the experiences that shaped his career. “I hope to pay it back someday, somehow,” he concludes, emphasizing the lasting impact of his education and the relationships built along the way.

In the spirit of community and connection, we celebrate Braden Porter and his contributions to the field of Agricultural Economics, embodying the values and aspirations of the University of Kentucky. Now pursuing a law degree, he continues to leverage his background in Ag Economics as he navigates the next chapter of his professional journey.
